Five Blessings Kynam Agarwood Bracelet, worn

Seven-millimeter disc beads of sinking-grade kynam agarwood from Nha Trang, Vietnam, dark and oily with a soft, sweet scent. Five spacers set with small stones in five colors are spread around the strand: gold, green, blue, red and earth.

Meaning

Agarwood forms only when the tree is wounded and heals itself with resin over many years. Kynam is the rarest kind, softer and sweeter than ordinary agarwood, and sinking grade means the wood is dense enough to sink in water. The five spacers stand for the Five Blessings of the oldest Chinese books: a long life, wealth, health and peace, virtue, and a peaceful end.

  • Polished and measured by hand, so sizes vary slightly.

Care

  • Keep it dry. Take it off to wash your hands or shower; if it gets wet, wipe it dry with a soft cloth and let it air in a ventilated place.
  • Keep it out of strong sun, which dulls the color and can crack the wood.
  • Agarwood is brittle. Avoid knocks and store it on its own so the beads don't rub.
  • Store it somewhere dry, cool and ventilated, ideally in a sealed bag or box to keep dust and smells out.
  • Keep it away from perfume, cosmetics and detergents.
  • Check the beads, the cord and the scent now and then, and repair anything early.
